“Clarky”

We typically have games on Sunday but this weekend our game was on Saturday night at 5:45 against Palm Beach. We played at their field which is located on the Gold Coast. By 5:45 it is dark here so it was another game under the lights. I have never played under the lights and now two games under the lights. It is a unique experience to play under the lights and I have grown to enjoy it!

Tennis or Training!

We arrived to training on Tuesday to see a pile of tennis balls. Was this Footy training or Tennis training? Curious I thought. After warming up Head Coach Jake Simmons-Bliss had us pair up and grab a tennis ball. We used the tennis balls to help improve our eye-hand coordination with the ball. We need to be precise and build our skills. This is an exercise I am sure to bring back to the states and use. Jake informed me he has tons of unique training exercises up his sleeve.

Rain and train!

Over the past week we experienced a great deal of rain causing the grounds to be very soggy. Tuesday’s training was cancelled and as the rain continued it looked like we may not be able to train Thursday as well. The rain began to clear Thursday but with all the rain the fields were closed so that they would not get torn up by trainings. Kate Clarkson one of my teammates connected us with an indoor facility and trainer that came to do some fitness training with us.

Player Registration Reminder

As a reminder, all participants in on-field activities must register with the USAFL. Dues are currently set at $50 until midnight EDT June 30th.  Starting July 1st, dues increase to $75 per person.

By registering, the player is covered by the USAFL’s liability insurance policy. Why is this important? It protects you, your club, and the league should an incident occur. And yes, people sue (it’s America). A 13 year old little league baseball player in New Jersey is being sued by a spectator who was hit with a baseball.

Revolution Development Squad to Play Canada

The USA Revolution, fresh from their success at the 2011 Australian Football League (AFL) International Cup, are busily preparing themselves to take on Canada in the 49th Parallel Cup, to be held in Dublin, OH, on August 4.

The 49th Parallel Cup is played between the U.S. and Canada each of the two years preceding an International Cup year, the next being in 2014. In 2010 an Under 23 Revolution team was drawn together for the very first time and played Canada as a curtain raiser to the women’s and men’s 49th Parallel Cup games.

5 Year Strategic Plan Released

The USAFL and AFL have announced a five-year strategic development plan for the league. The plan is derived from international affiliate reporting standards while adapting to regional goals. League President, Andy Vanica, states “This is a big step forward for the league to focus on long-term growth with an operational plan for future boards to follow. Our time with Tony Woods during his recent visit was valuable and I thank the AFL for putting their faith in the USAFL.”

The Ball!

What an awesome event! To see everyone dolled up and mingling was beautiful. The mid season ball was an event put on by the Yeronga Club as a fund raiser and community event. It gave me a chance to meet people in the club beyond the ladies team. I met Sam Corless president of the club and friend to my coach Leigh Barnsey back home. It was a pleasure to connect with him and thank him for assisting in making this trip happen. I also had the chance to visit with Tami Dunn the team physical trainer whom I had been in contact with for some time prior to my arrival.

Game time!

Friday June 22 at 7:30pm we had a game. It was a beautiful night. We couldn’t have asked for better weather. The excitement was thick in the air. Playing under the lights was a unique experience for me. It was gorgeous! Yeronga showed once again what a power house they are. The final score was 114 to 13. Despite the score the opposition put up a good fight forcing Yeronga to stay focused and strong.
