International Cup Draw Released

The AFL has released the draw for the International Cup to be held in Sydney and Melbourne August 12 – 27.  There will be 18 countries competing in the men’s competition. Round one will be a seeding round used to determine two divisions. Teams have been split into six groups of three with each team to play the other two teams in its group in lightning match format of 2 X 15 minute halves. Based on the results of round one the top twelve teams will be placed in Division 1 and the remaining six will make up Division 2.

USA Freedom Coach, Leigh Barnes, announced the USA Freedom squad for the 2011 AFL International Cup today.  The team will travel to Australia in August to compete in the first ever women’s International Cup competition.

Six teams from the USA, Canada, Papua New Guinea, Italy, Ireland and a Multi-cultural Indigenous team will compete in this history-making event in Sydney and Melbourne from August 15-27.

Monday, March 14 - In anticipation of the largest ever AFL International Cup, to be held in Australia during August this year, Revolution Coach Matt Bishop has named the 2011 Revolution squad.

Twenty-four teams from all over the world will participate in the fourth AFL International Cup and the expectations on the U.S.A. team are high.  “Ideally we would like to exceed our best ever performance of a 3rd place finish and play in the Grand Final to be played at the home of Australian Football, the Melbourne Cricket Ground,” said Coach Bishop.

The squad was finalized after the team training camp that was held in Austin, Texas, over the weekend of February 25-27. The players were chosen from an extensive list of quality candidates that have been involved with the Revolution during 2009 and 2010, including two successful 49th Parallel Cup campaigns against the Canadian Northwind.

During the weekend of February 25-27, the USA Revolution and USA Freedom held their final training camp before the 2011 International Cup in Austin, Texas. There were 34 Revolution and 22 Freedom hopefuls competing for a spot on the squads to travel to Australia in August.

"The weekend was a great success and definitely gave us a lot to think about", said Revolution Head Coach, Matt Bishop, "We will be announcing the squad for the 2011 International Cup in the coming weeks".

US Revolution Head Coach, Matt Bishop, is excited and nervous about the big year ahead, with his team heading to the International Cup in Sydney and Melbourne in August. "The anticipation and anxiety levels have certainly shot up since the clock ticked into 2011. While there are many projects to be completed before the International Cup part of me wishes it was here already!"

The Freedom Prepare for Australia

The USA Freedom are preparing for their first ever AFL International Cup tour to Australia later this year. “I’m extremely excited to be coaching the Freedom at their first big international tournament” said Coach, Leigh Barnes, “this is going to be a fantastic experience for both the players and coaching staff and the event will mark a significant achievement in the history of women’s footy in the U.S.”.

Barnes recently appointed a number of key individuals to the Freedom coaching staff to assist in the preparation of the team for the International Cup. “I am also pleased to announce the appointment of the leadership group who I think will really help make this campaign a success” he continued.

The USA Freedom is accepting nominations from players who wish to try out for the 2011 team which will travel to Australia to play in the first ever Women's Division of the International Cup.The Freedom Training Camp, Februaru 25-27 in Austin, Texas, will be the last opportunity for players to try out for the squad.

Revolution Jumpers

The USAFL will be holding a training camp for the USA Revolution and USA Freedom teams in Austin, Texas the weekend of February 25-27. The Revolution Coaches will be focusing on the preparation of players for the International Cup in Australia, in August 2011, and the camp will be used to finalize the squad for this tournament. Attendance at the camp is by invitation only.

The USAFL is excited to announce the appointment of Leigh Barnes, former Executive Board Member and long time USAFL player, umpire, coach and administrator as the new national women's team coach. “We are extremely pleased to have Barnesy on-board as the Freedom’s Head Coach, he brings with him many years of playing and coaching experience and a good nature that will enable him to bond well from day one with the team”, says Rich Mann, USAFL President.

International Cup Date Change

The AFL have made some changes to the scheduling of the 2011 International Cup after taking into consideration the requests of participating countries nominated as well as the recently released 2011 AFL fixture. The tournament will be played in both Sydney and Melbourne from Friday August 12 through to Saturday August 27, 2011.
