Marshall Hanging Tough Through AFLW Midway Point

Last weekend saw round four of the AFLW season take place, which means we’re officially halfway through the home and away season, and also halfway through trailblazer Dani Marshall’s first season in the AFLW. Let’s take a look at how Dani and her team the Western Bulldogs have gone so far this season, and what they have to come for the second half of their campaign.

Round 1 saw the Bulldogs come up against competition newbies St Kilda.

Marshall Makes Most of AFLW Debut

Arizona Hawk and USA Freedom player Danielle Marshall made the most of her historic AFLW debut, scoring a goal with her first kick of senior football as the Western Bulldogs defeated the St Kilda Saints by 25 points.

Round One of the 2020 AFLW season saw a debut in the competition for St Kilda and return to their spiritual home at Moorabbin, but it was the Western Bulldogs who got their season off to the best start, winning by 25 points.

Marshall's Debut Part of Blockbuster Weekend

In July, the dream of an American woman playing in AFLW moved closer when Dani Marshall signed on with the Western Bulldogs senior side.

Today, seven months later, that dream moves to the precipice of reality.

The Dusty Road to Darwin; Kloh Follows Her Football Passion

Rosemary Kloh’s second date with Rob Kwoka was life changing.

Rob had asked her to come along and watch his sister, Lauré, play in the USAFL Western Regional Championships for the Sacramento Suns.  

“I had no idea what was going on,” she recalls.  “I just cheered when Rob cheered.”

It was the beginning of two successful courtships.  Four and a half years after that date -- a couple of days after this past Christmas -- Rob popped the question, and Kloh replied in the affirmative.

Six Americans Lead Charge Towards AFLW

It’s been a meteoric rise for women’s Aussie Rules football over the past five years.

The most visible aspect has been the birth of AFL Women’s in 2017 and its rapid growth.  From eight teams in its inception year of 2017, the league is poised to go up to fourteen clubs next year, and it will only be a matter of time before all eighteen AFL member clubs are represented.

Sam Murphy’s journey from American football walk-on to state league Aussie footballer has been a fun and eventful odyssey. The ruckman from the Los Angeles Dragons made his debut two weeks ago for the West Perth Falcons in the WAFL, becoming the latest American to thrive in local footy.

Katie and the Mugars travelled to historic Windy Hill to face the Essendon Bombers, led by Canadian foes Kendra Heil and Valerie Moreau, and came out eight point winners.  Playing in the back line for the second straight game, Katie gathered eight possessions and recorded a mark, totaling 22 “Dream Team” points.  The Mugars go into their first bye week at 1-1, and are back in action against the N.T. Thunder at the Avalon Airport Oval on May 26 (first bounce: 9:10pm on Friday May 25 USEDT).
