Steve McVicker: An American in Paris

(Steve McVicker is an American that has been playing forward/half-forward for the Denver Bulldogs since 2014)

It's 9:30 at night on a wet, rainy Monday night in France. I'm doing burpees in the cold, wet mud of a rugby pitch over an hour outside Paris with a bunch of French guys I've never met before, and I'm wondering:

Wave Those Flags: Remembering Alex Benjamin

The overall character of a football community, be it local, national, or international, is a sum of its parts.  Usually, we only see the high profile ones – the players on the ground, the coaches, and those in the upper reaches of the administrative hierarchy.  But the living and breathing dynamic of a club or a league also includes and relies on umpires, clubpeople, and fans for continuity.  For if it wasn’t for those, this community wouldn’t be here.

Ryan Steps Down as USAFL President

USAFL President Denis Ryan has tendered his resignation to the league, effective immediately.  Michael Sheppard, the current USAFL Eastern Regional VP, will take over as interim president.

2017 USAFL Regional Series Announced

For the third straight season, the USAFL will travel around the country bringing exciting Australian football action to three American cities.

The 2017 USAFL Regionals series sees the best men’s and women’s teams in the country converge to see who will lift the hardware in a pivotal series of midseason matches.

Last year saw 26 clubs and several hundred players take to grounds across the country, and this year the hope is that more teams and footballers will get involved to help continue to make these among the best events on the USAFL calendar.

2016 USAFL National Honor Roll

Following the completion of the 2016 USAFL season, many clubs across the country held year end dinners, banquets, and presentations to recognize the best players and clubpeople in local tradition.  For many, this truly brought down the curtain on this season which began some nine or so months ago (if not earlier), and which will dawn again in some weeks' time.

Top 10 Games of Season 2016

Much like any season, the 2016 USAFL campaign was dotted with great matches with memorable performances and fantastic finishes.

Each weekday, beginning on Monday, November 28th, we’ll count down the top ten matches of the season, in our humble opinion, of those that were filmed by the USAFL and our broadcast partners, including Stateside Footy TV, GoLive SportsCast, and Capitol Community TV.

Same as it Ever Was; No Major Changes to Poll

Shh… can you hear it?

Silence.

Well, maybe not complete silence, save the fluttering of Eagles’ wings and Tigers’ paws, but other than the shuffling of several teams, an eerily quiet Top 20 Poll, the next to last one before Nationals’ seedings are announced at the end of the month, saw 17 teams stand pat.

Golden Gate Sneaks Up to #3; Crows Still Tops

I’m glad to see someone is paying attention.

Last week’s poll seemed to bring a lot of opinions as to where teams should have been, especially towards the top of the poll.  And that’s good.  That’s the point of this whole thing is to drive a conversation and get people talking.

Another three weeks is under our belt, and while many of us were watching people jump and swim and run and flip and do all sorts of stuff for some chocolate covered gold coins that you wear around your neck, there was a lot of footy going on and it affected the positions.

Ups and Downs - Regional Results Shake Poll

I’ve only felt an earthquake once in my entire life.

It was August, 2011, and there was a 6.0-mag quake in Virginia that we felt all the way up in Philadelphia.

But while in Salem, Oregon two weekends ago for the Western Regional Tournament, I witnessed another one.

Dragons, Houston, Dees, Eagles Move Up in Poll #4

The winds of winter are being felt in Australia, while the heat of summer is broiling the great meadows of the American continent.

The winds of change on the USAFL Top 20 poll, however, weren’t much of a gust so much as they were a gentle breeze, not unlike the Fremantle Doctor cooling down the West Coast.  There weren’t many games played in voting round four, but the ripples from a great day in Yonkers were felt up and down the ladder, helping even teams who didn’t even take to the field.
