With the retirement of US Freedom Head Coach Wayne Kraska, the USAFL is embarking on a search for a new head coach to lead the US Freedom to the first Women's International Cup in 2011.

Freedom Head Coach

Overview

The USAFL is the official representative organization of Australian Football in the USA and is seeking to fill the position of Head Coach for the United States Freedom, the women's national representative team.

Responsibilities

The Head Coach is primarily responsible for the on-field performance of the team and is also responsible for recruiting volunteer assistant coaches. The Head Coach will lead the selection process for the 2011 Freedom Squad, which will travel to Australia for the International Cup from August 6-21, 2011.

As with all coaching positions, communication skills are crucial, both on and off the field. The successful applicant will display good communication skills both by phone and email. The applicant will also be the primary link to bring the team together off the field by building a strong network amongst the players.

The successful applicant should posses a combination of skills including:

  • Previous coaching experience (preferred but not required);
  • a high level of communication skills;
  • good business skills;
  • leadership;
  • a demonstrated dedication to the USAFL
  • solid knowledge of all USAFL teams;
  • an understanding of financial and geographical challenges facing USAFL players
  • commitment to developing women's sport in the United States and building new relationships with all relevant stakeholders; and
  • an ability to "bring into the fold" and educate players who may be relatively new to the game of Australian Football.

The coach will be required to attend a certain number of regional camps per year as well as various Freedom selection events. Limited financial support will be available for travel.

This is a volunteer position and will be appointed to run though the end of 2012.  The appointed Head Coach will be required to pay the same proportion of costs as the players.

Background on the United States Freedom

The Freedom is the National women's team of the United States Australian Football League (USAFL). The USAFL is focused on developing women’s footy and building the National team over the next 12 months with the aim of competing in the 2011 International Cup. Travel during 2010 and 2011 will likely involve domestic travel for training camps, possible tournament entries and international matches. In 2011, the Freedom hopes to place at the 2011 International Cup.
