Freedom & Liberty Named

The USA Freedom coaching staff is pleased to announce the teams for the 2013 49th Parallel Cup. The USA Freedom and newly named USA Liberty (women’s development squad) will take on Canada in next weekend’s tournament in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

“We are truly thrilled to be able to field two full teams once again”, said Head Coach Leigh Barnes, “while it is unfortunate that a number of players missed out on being picked to either squad, it does go to show just how much the program has grown in the last few years”.

Time to leap into US market

It's a sneak peek at the brave new world of AFL, recruiting athletic talent and size which simply isn't available in Australia in anywhere near the numbers of the United States.

Paul Roos has always believed the US college basketballers are an obvious source of talent for the AFL and the recent visit of 200cm plus trio Jason Holmes, Mark Cisco and Patrick Mitchell has only strengthened his view.

A display of their amazing skills above the rim on a Moore Park basketball court provided a tantalizing glimpse of just what they could do with a Sherrin in their hands.

Portland Umpire Clinic

The first 2013 Umpire Clinic being hosted by the USAFL and USAFL Umpires Association will be held on August 16-17, 2013 in Portland, OR in conjunction with the Stumptown Throwdown set for that weekend.

The Umpire Clinic is designed for all comers, from those who are looking to get started and up through those who are working in the accreditation process. In addition to classroom time and field time, all attendees will have multiple opportunities to umpire games during the tournament and receive immediate feedback and coaching.

Urban Cowboy To Return for 11th USAFL Nationals

The 2013 USAFL Nationals will mark the 11th consecutive year Rodney "Grilla" Grljusich has provided his unique play by play commentary as "The Voice of the USAFL Nationals". Due to his unique sound and great success in the U.S., Grilla has also been a part of the commentary team at the last two International Cup tournaments in Australia.

Player Registration Reminder

Players and clubs are reminded that the player registration fee will be increased this Monday, July 1 from $50 to $75. Additionally, this Sunday is the last opportunity for clubs to purchase pre-paid player memberships.

To earn qualification points for this year’s Nationals, all players must be registered in the LMS before playing their first game. Players will not be able to accrue points unless they are registered and paid for the current season. Read more about the League Management System here »

The Biggest Little City to Host Inaugural Western Regional Tournament

Up to ten USAFL teams will descend upon Reno, Nevada this September in the first ever Western Regional Tournament. Both mens and womens teams will compete in this one day event to help provide a more comprehensive method for ranking teams leading up to the USAFL National Tournament in October.

Brandon Blankenship, USAFL Vice President for the Western Region and President of the San Diego Lions, has been hard at work organizing this inaugural event.

2014 International Cup dates confirmed

The AFL is pleased to announce the 2014 International Cup will be held in Melbourne from Saturday August 9 to Saturday August 23 2014.

The fifth International Cup carnival will include two AFL curtain-raiser matches, matches played at AFL and VFL venues, a men’s and women’s competition, a standalone AFL 9s fixture and matches linked with community football leagues.

AFL International Development Manager Tony Woods said the aim was to make IC14 the biggest International Cup to date.
