Revolution Look to Tame Lions in Curtain Raiser to Swans v Saints Game

The Revolution vs. South Africa Lions game has been selected by the AFL to be the curtain raiser for Sunday’s Sydney Swans vs. St. Kilda Saints at ANZ Stadium. Coach Matt Bishop summed up the experience, “The game against South Africa is a fantastic opportunity for the squad to play a game with such high stakes at a state of the art venue, one that most Australians will never get.” An additional highlight on the day will be a visit by US Ambassador to Australia, Jeffrey Bleich who will address the team prior to the game and perform the coin toss.

Freedom Smother Flame

The Freedom continued their winning ways with a convincing win over the Papua New Guinea Flame on Thursday night at Blacktown by a score of 6.5 (41) to 1.0 (6).  Under the bright lights the Flame had trouble finding their way against the more experienced Freedom side.  With the win the Freedom are 2-0 and second on the ladder trailing only Ireland by percentage.

Game Day Preview: Freedom Set to Take on Papua New Guinea Flame

The Freedom do not have much time to enjoy their first victory in Women's International Cup history.  Their convincing win yesterday over the Australia side was a great confidence boost, but they will have to focus on the task at hand against a young, skillful Papua New Guinea Flame side.  The average age of the Flame is 18 years old and they will be looking to use their youthful exuberance and speed to their advantage.

Freedom Make History

Lindsey Kastanek kicked the first goal and the Freedom never looked back in their impressive International Cup debut victory over the Australian Indigenous Multicultural team.  Playing in rainy conditions the US women played an agressive style and displayed great teamwork to run out winners by the score of 10.12 (72) to 0.0 (0).

USAFL Umpire Making His Mark at the International Cup

USAFL umpire Jon Mills is currently in Australia at the International Cup where he has had the opportunity to umpire players from around the world.   Teams that he has umpired so far include, Canada and Ireland on the women's side, Great Britain, Timor Leste and Ireland on the men's side.

As the recepient of the 2011 USAFL umpire scholarship Mills has been given the opportunity to learn from some of the best in Australia.  On game day Mills receives tips from his assigned umpire coach.  On his off days he stays fit by training with the Sydney umpires group.

Revolution Slice Samurai

The Revolution came into their game against Japan looking to build upon the momentum they established in their first two victories in round 1.  The determination and desire was evident from the opening bounce.  The Revos moved the ball in to their forward 50 quickly and it rarely left that end of the ground.  Jesse Leos got the scoring started with an early goal and Andy Vanica, Bryan Dragus (2), Jacob Moyer and Donnie Lucero rounded out the scoring in a dominant opening term. The next three quarters were much the same as the Revos ran away with a 17.12 (114) to 0.1 (1) victory.

Game Day Preview: Revolution set to take on Japan

First up for the Revolution in Division 1 pool play will be Japan.  In Saturday’s action the Samurai went 1-1 on the day.  Losing their first game against a young, athletic Nauru side by 23 points, 6.6 (42) to 3.1 (19). Nauru also defeated Fiji setting up a showdown between Japan and Fiji in what turned out to be a dramatic thriller.

Peaceful Northwind Can't Stop the Revolution

The Revolution have gotten their 2011 International Cup campaign off to a fantasitc start. After going 2-0 in pool play the Americans have secured the number 5 seed in Division 1.  Their first game was against familiar foe Canada Northwind and was one of the mostly highly anticipated matchups of the opening round.  The game did not disappoint and was described by the announcer as, "A slog with neither team willing to concede a goal."

Ambassador Beazley Sends off the Freedom & Revolution to the International Cup

By: Denis Ryan

A couple of weeks ago I received a request from a Scott Bolitho of the Embassy of Australia. You see, Australia's Ambassador to the US, Kim Beazley, is the patron of the USAFL and he wanted to hold a reception in honor of the local Baltimore Washington Eagles players who were about to head down under and represent the US at the 2011 International Cup of Australian Football.
