2016 Season Preview - Men's East

At one time, the Eastern region could be compared to the Beatles; three talented lead musicians, a steady fourth keeping pace, and a rotating cast of cameos.

Over the past two years, however, the remains of the EAFL have become a solo artist and a backing band.  New York has been the best team on the Eastern seaboard for over a half decade, and though they have lost some of the luster that shone through when they were Divvy 1 champs in 2014, they are still center stage.

“It is spring again. The earth is like a child that knows poems by heart.” ― Rainer Maria Rilke

Another long American winter has finally dissipated, and though the Cold Old Man still clings to certain parts of the country with an iron grip, it cannot stop the coming of the 2016 USAFL season.

Through a gauntlet of local, regional, and sometimes national matches through the varying climes that our landscape offers, 34 USAFL clubs will weave their way towards the ultimate goal of lifting up a piece of hardware at Nationals.

Between the Posts: All of the Footy.

I want to say I've had some time to reflect on the weekend now that this is my second Monday of the week, but everything has been such a whirlwind the past 36 hours so I haven't had time to really digest the situation. Arriving at the Sydney airport led to my frantic 2 hour sprint around the building because I found out I didn't have an actual ticket to get home (shout out to Cyclone Winston), so I didn't have time to really gather my bearings before the long sleep in the air.

Kickin' with Klatt: The One the Day After

I've now had a day to sit back and reflect on the big day. To first go over it a bit, I'll say that it was a really fun time and a great experience. The morning session was all fitness testing. I was middle of the pack (of about 50 girls) for all of them, as I expected, although my 20m sprint was on the better end. So those results were no surprise to me.

Kickin' with Klatt: The One the Day Before

Well, tomorrow is the big day. It hadn't really hit me yet - so far, it's just felt like an awesome vacation. The realization hit me like a truck tonight though, as I was packing up for the morning.

Hemenway Looks to Lead the Way in Sydney

Kim Hemenway generally likes to grab life by the ball.

First it was soccer, then it was basketball, and eventually footy.  She continuously has challenged herself in sport, and in life, and for the most part has been very successful.

Last season, she led her New York Magpies to its best season in their history, and was arguably the best player in the league.  In seven seasons since discovering the sport on Craiglist, of all places, she has become one of the most well-rounded Aussie Rules players this country has seen.

Between the Posts: Footy.

In less than two weeks, I will be hitting the skies and heading to Sydney, Australia, for the AFL Women's Talent Search. If you aren't sure what that is, think NFL combine for athletes who didn't play football in college.  We will be tested in a variety of fitness areas, including a 20m sprint, a running vertical jump, a standing vertical jump, the AFL agility test, and the ever lovely beep test.  For those of you who aren't sure what a beep test entails, just imagine running back and forth through the 7th circle of Hell and you'll be pretty close to spot on.

Kickin' With Klatt - An Unexpected Footy Journey

In 2013, Katie Klatt moved to Sacramento, California, to begin her career as a registered nurse at the University of California-Davis Children’s Hospital.

Little did she know that a move to answer one calling would spawn another; this time as an Australian Rules football player.  Klatt didn’t even know about Footy until she happened upon a YouTube video of the sport. Just two years later, she has become one of the USAFL’s best defensive players, and has risen to the role vice-captain for both the Sacramento Suns and the USA Freedom national team.

Now, she’s preparing to take an even bigger leap.
