Boston Women's Tournament Wrap Up

As the sun rose over a sleepy Cambridge, MA on Saturday June 30th, 14 women laced up their cleats, erected some goal posts and put out cones to mark the field at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Briggs Field. They were prepared for the day, with coolers of ice, water and Gatorade, cut up fruit and gazebos to keep worst of the sunburn at bay.  The Boston Lady Demons were hosting the Montreal Angels and New York Magpies in the inaugural Boston Lady Demons tournament. The Boston River Rats, a metro side, also hosted a Montreal Saints metro side on the day.

Player Registration Reminder

As a reminder, all participants in on-field activities must register with the USAFL. Dues are currently set at $50 until midnight EDT June 30th.  Starting July 1st, dues increase to $75 per person.

By registering, the player is covered by the USAFL’s liability insurance policy. Why is this important? It protects you, your club, and the league should an incident occur. And yes, people sue (it’s America). A 13 year old little league baseball player in New Jersey is being sued by a spectator who was hit with a baseball.

‘Roos on Nashville TV!

Recently, Nashville News 2 (WKRN) featured the Nashville Kangaroos in one of its weekend sports segments. The segment showcased interviews with current players, highlights from the ‘Roos June 16 clash with Columbus, and a special live music performance.

Interviewed in the video are Club President, Clint Milner, Team Captain, Luke Nemeth, Dave “Frosty” Harris, and Joel Morley.

The Kangaroos will be back in action July 28 at Elmington Park when the Boston Demons travel south to Nashville.

Revolution Development Squad to Play Canada

The USA Revolution, fresh from their success at the 2011 Australian Football League (AFL) International Cup, are busily preparing themselves to take on Canada in the 49th Parallel Cup, to be held in Dublin, OH, on August 4.

The 49th Parallel Cup is played between the U.S. and Canada each of the two years preceding an International Cup year, the next being in 2014. In 2010 an Under 23 Revolution team was drawn together for the very first time and played Canada as a curtain raiser to the women’s and men’s 49th Parallel Cup games.

5 Year Strategic Plan Released

The USAFL and AFL have announced a five-year strategic development plan for the league. The plan is derived from international affiliate reporting standards while adapting to regional goals. League President, Andy Vanica, states “This is a big step forward for the league to focus on long-term growth with an operational plan for future boards to follow. Our time with Tony Woods during his recent visit was valuable and I thank the AFL for putting their faith in the USAFL.”

Freedom Set for Clash with Rivals from North of the 49th Parallel

In preparation for the 49th Parallel Cup in Dublin, Ohio on August 4, the USA Freedom held their annual training camp in Minneapolis, Minnesota over the weekend of June 15-17. There was a great turn out by women from all across the USA with many returning players from the 2011 International Cup squad and a number of new faces.

Burley Sekem Official Supplier of the USAFL

The USAFL and Burley Sekem have reached an agreement to continue the long-standing relationship. Burley Sekem is the official supplier of footballs and apparel to the USAFL, including the USA Revolution and Freedom representative teams. In addition, Burley Sekem will sponsor an alumni game at the 2012 National Tournament in honor of the League’s 15th Anniversary.
