2016 USAFL Nationals Preview - Women's Division

After an important growth year for women’s footy in the USA, 2016 once again was a showcase of just how strong the female football program is in the country.

It’s going to be hard to top last year’s 10th Anniversary Nationals, however.  Heading into the last set of Division 1 matches, four of the five clubs competition had a chance to be crowned premiers, and in the end the song remained the same.  Denver, despite being tripped up by Minnesota, continued to write their legendary story and hoist their sixth straight Nationals cup.

“I'm back to livin' Floridays / Blue skies and ultra-violet rays / Lookin' for better days, lookin' for better days / Lookin' for Floridays.” – Jimmy Buffett

There is a little bit of incredulity running through my fingertips as I begin this preview series of the 2016 USAFL National Championships.

Same as it Ever Was; No Major Changes to Poll

Shh… can you hear it?

Silence.

Well, maybe not complete silence, save the fluttering of Eagles’ wings and Tigers’ paws, but other than the shuffling of several teams, an eerily quiet Top 20 Poll, the next to last one before Nationals’ seedings are announced at the end of the month, saw 17 teams stand pat.

Maidens Look to Defend East-West Showdown Crown

It began simply as friendly banter on the other side of the world.

Two sets of teammates, having a discussion as to who was the better side.  Surely in sporting history this is not an anomaly, as thousands of rivals have chirped and guffawed their superiority.

But this was different.  This was a group of women representing the USA Freedom national team at the 2014 International Cup in Melbourne.  Moreso, they represented two long established footy clubs separated by 3,000 miles of real estate.

Golden Gate Sneaks Up to #3; Crows Still Tops

I’m glad to see someone is paying attention.

Last week’s poll seemed to bring a lot of opinions as to where teams should have been, especially towards the top of the poll.  And that’s good.  That’s the point of this whole thing is to drive a conversation and get people talking.

Another three weeks is under our belt, and while many of us were watching people jump and swim and run and flip and do all sorts of stuff for some chocolate covered gold coins that you wear around your neck, there was a lot of footy going on and it affected the positions.

Women's Footy: We Are All Game Changers

Over a decade ago, I fell in love with a sport that I had never heard of and happened to discover.

It was unlike anything that I knew but integrated all the traditional sports that I grew up playing. As a single mother and recent college graduate, joining the Arizona Hawks fulfilled my craving to be a part of a team. Alongside my sister (by choice, not birth), now my coach, I played my first game at the 2005 USAFL Nationals in the inaugural women's division.

Ups and Downs - Regional Results Shake Poll

I’ve only felt an earthquake once in my entire life.

It was August, 2011, and there was a 6.0-mag quake in Virginia that we felt all the way up in Philadelphia.

But while in Salem, Oregon two weekends ago for the Western Regional Tournament, I witnessed another one.
