Countdown to the 49th Parallel Cup
The United States Australian Football League (USAFL) will be hosting the 2012 49th Parallel Cup, a series of matches between US and Canadian national representative teams, on Saturday, August 4th.
Matches will take place at Darree Fields, located at 6259 Cosgray Road, Dublin, from 10:00am until 6:30pm. The event will consist of four games during the day beginning with a women's development squad match followed by a men's development squad match. The women’s national representative teams, the USA Freedom and the Canadian Northern Lights, will then square off followed by the men’s national teams the USA Revolution taking on the Canadian North Wind. The event is FREE and open to the public.
During the last 49th Parallel Cup, held in Toronto, Canada in 2010 the USA Revolution and Revolution Development Squad both beat their hosts convincingly. Unfortunately the women did not come away with a win, so the Freedom have a score to settle. View 2010 results here »
The first 49th Parallel Cup (pictured left) was played in Chicago, Illionios in 1999 between the Canadian North Wind and the USA Revolution, coached by Paul Roos. The Freedom and Northern Lights match was added in 2007. The event is held annually except in International Cup years, which takes place every three years.
This year with the event being held in Dublin it will take on an added international flavor as Dublin’s 25th Irish Festival will going on the same weekend. Players will be encouraged to enjoy the festivities following the tournament on Saturday.
