USA Freedom & Liberty Renew Spurs' Partnership
The USA Freedom and Liberty (Freeberty) tour of Australia is getting closer and closer, and the excitement for that fortnight in August is building rapidly. The tour will include the Freedom taking part in the 2017 AFL International Cup, while the Liberty will be playing games in and around Melbourne against local clubs.
Once again, the USA Freedom program is fortunate to continue their partnership with the VU Western Spurs, who will host a training session on Monday, August 7th.
The collaboration with the Spurs goes back to IC 2014, when the Freedom and Liberty went to St. Albans to train with the Spurs, and had a great night with players and supporters afterwards, which helped kicked off the Spurs’ tour of the states the following month.
“We also played our Community round game at St Albans,” said Freedom coach Leigh Barnes, “and it was tremendous the way we were embraced by the Spurs community for that game. When the Spurs made it to the USA, the USAFL women’s teams had the pleasure of returning the favor and hosting several games across the country.”
Barnes and fellow Freedom coach Troy Anthony attended a Spurs game last year at their new base in Footscray, to the west of downtown Melbourne, last year. Barnes said he’s eager to catching up with old and new friends from the Spurs organization.
Spurs and Melbourne FC coach Deb Lee hosted the Freeberty at the MCG in 2014 at the Melbourne Social Club, giving everyone in attendance a bird’s eye view of the footy, and a memorable evening. The Spurs and Demons will play host to the players at the MCG again on August 13th for the Demons-St Kilda match.
In addition, the Spurs and Freeberty are pleased to announce that the VU Western Spurs major sponsor, Brad Teal Real Estate, has come on board and generously donated to their campaign. The Freedom and Liberty uniform shorts will be proudly adorned with their logo. The Freeberty would like to thank Brad Teal Real Estate for their sponsorship and to Rebecca Towns for orchestrating the parternship.
All the best to all players, coaches and staff that are embarking on this epic tour and we know that you will do your best and make your Country and the USAFL proud.
