Eagles, Lady Eagles Open Season in Iceland

As arctic winds race across the Icelandic tundra, so too will seven international footy teams rage upon the turf seeking glory, adventure, and most importantly – the after-party.  

On Saturday, March 25^th in Reykjavik, Iceland, these intrepid teams face off in the first footy Arctic Cup: the Baltimore-Washington Eagles of the USA, the Halifax Dockers of Nova Scotia, the Port Malmo Maulers of Sweden, the South East London Giants of England, and Iceland’s national team, the Ravens. The South East London Giants will also bring a women’s side, matching up with an opposing women’s team jumble featuring players from the Baltimore-Washington Lady Eagles, the New York Magpies, the Boston Demons, and the Montreal Angels.

These fierce contenders will meet in a 9s tournament hosted in the capital city of Reykjavik, presumably on a turf field protected from Iceland’s harsh winter weather and any curious adventuring arctic foxes sniffling around the grounds. The matches begin at 10am (6am US/Eastern) and conclude with festivities at an Icelandic bar with – rumor has it – White Russians topped with coco puffs.  Though some attendees are undoubtedly attracted to the 9s tournament style and a chance to play footy internationally, other appealing features include the aforementioned White Russians, vast Icelandic scenery, and the pale tranquil waters of Iceland’s Blue Lagoon.

Despite a definitively rainy forecast, dispositions remain sunny as the Eagles embark on this fabulous footy field trip. If successful, this pre-season tournament could establish a new tradition of international February tournaments, effectively sandwiching the regular footy season between a pre-season trip and Nationals.
