USAFL Umpire Clinics 2011

The USAFL is pleased to announce three Umpire Clinics across the country this summer. If you are interested in attending, please contact Jeff Persson, USAFL Umpire Director, at umpiring@usafl.com.

  • May 20-21 in Chicago, IL
  • June 3-4 in Atlanta, GA
  • June 24-25 in Denver, CO

Commensurate with the growth in actually playing footy is a need to grow the support staff that make playing games possible. The two key areas for this are coaching and umpiring. Both are targets of the 2011 USAFL Board.

Umpiring in particular is key if the USAFL is to run a successful Nationals Tournament each October. To ensure the number of quality umpires keeps up with the growth of teams playing games locally, interstate and at nationals, we appeal to anyone interested in umpiring to try to attend one or more of these clinics. You can start with no experience or with a fair bit of experience: one can always improve.

The Clinc

Each clinic will consist of a two-hour session on Friday night in the classroom, a two hour session Saturday morning on field, and then plenty of game time to apply your learnings with immediate feedback and coaching. Saturday night of course will include the usual post game footy gathering arranged by the host club.  Included with the clinic are your AFL Laws book, a game Log Book and more.

The Umpire Accreditation Process

There are multiple levels of accreditation for umpires, whether field, boundary, or goal. Upon completion of the umpire clinic you will be a Level 0 umpire, working toward your level 1 accreditation. During the year you will work on becoming a better umpire with the goal to have all umpires working games at Nationals in October. At Nationals, you will be assessed for accreditation at Level 1. Assuming you perform at that level, you complete the paperwork and we submit your accreditation to the AFL. Your accreditation is good for four years and is valid anywhere in the world (because our accreditation process is approved by the AFL). Here are the umpire levels by position.
