USA to AUS - The Intern from Texas
G'day Mate! My name is Julie Fisher and I am a proud Austin, Texan working at the Claremont Football Club (in Perth, Western Australia) until May 2010. I am currently enrolled at Texas State University, but I am satisfying my last course credit by working here at the footy club. I found out about this amazing opportunity through Study Australia which helps send students abroad for education and internships. I have been at the club for two months now and I am enjoying every second of it!
Before arriving in Australia, I had never heard of "footy"; the enormous oval, playing without pads, 36 players on the oval at once-it was all new to me! Now, two months later, I am practising with Claremont's women's team, The Piranhas, helping out at junior clinics, and doing the PA for the Claremont home games. Although it has taken me a while to learn all of the ins-and-outs of Aussie Rules, I can now watch a game and understand what is going on.
Upon arrival, I heard that Australians were crazy about their sports, but that didn't become more apparent until footy season started. All ages from kids to seniors are very involved and knowledgeable about what is going on in the WAFL and AFL at all times. It is a very exciting environment to be in when everyone is caught up in the footy action.
The concept of a football club is something that I find very exceptional and unique. I love the traditions and how several of the past players and supporters stay very active through the club for several years. I look forward to every Tuesday when I get to see "Dad's Army" and the members of the ladies' committee who volunteer their time and have been active in the club for many years. It is so entertaining to hear about their wonderful old memories of the game.
I will be working at the footy club for a total of three months and my main job responsibilities include updating the website, marketing, attending junior clinics, promoting Auskick programs and assisting in the production of Tiger Talk. I have also been able to attend several Club functions like Ascot Race Day, Corporate Classic and a Growling Tiger function on the Swan River. I have really enjoyed going to the club events to meet the players (past and present), members and supporters.
Through the club, I have learnt so much about footy and the Australian culture. Everyone has been so welcoming and endearing throughout my time here. Thank you so much to all of the people who have made my time at the Club so enjoyable and such a wonderful experience. When it comes time to go, it will be very hard to leave, but I have confidence that the "Year of the Tiger" will follow through and the Tigers will go all the way. I will be cheering for them in Texas!
