From Melbourne to Texas: Riddell Umpires take to Nationals

Over forty teams will be making the trip to Austin for Nationals next week, making the long journey to compete.  One other team will be there, but for a whole different reason.

Melbourne-based Riddell Umpires, the officiating association of the Riddell District Football League, will be participating in this year's National Championships, becoming the first team of umpires from Australia to do so.   Founded in 1983, Riddell Umpires have become one of the largest and most innovative umpiring associations in Australia.

Western Bulldogs' Wuetschner Arrives in Boston

You don’t need to look at a map to know, inherently, that Boston is a long, long way from Australia.

From a footy sense, this is the case as well.  The open parks and school yards that the Boston Lady Demons train and play on are in vast contrast to the ovals Down Under, which are tailor made for Australian Rules Football.  The spectator totals here smaller, and most Americans have never even heard of the sport.

Canadians Storm Home over Freedom to win Parallel Cup

LAUDERHILL, Florida -- Lightning.  It can come in a bottle, it never strikes twice, and it sometimes delays the inevitable.

It is also quick, unpredictable, and highly dangerous.  As the USA Freedom and Canada Northern Lights found out, it can be your best friend or your worst enemy.  And just as fast as the Americans sprinted out to a big first quarter lead, their counterparts from up north struck back early and often, then were miserly about letting the Americans get any sniff of a victory.

Sunglasses At Night - Pregaming the 49th Parallel Cup Men

It is a long and winding road between now and the year 2017.

Three long years will simply ferment the simmering feelings of two talented footballing nations who feel that their trips to Melbourne for the International Cup last summer would be largely unfulfilled.  The USA finished 8th, their worst IC finish in history.  Canada finished fifth, their best ever result, but were on the wrong side of the percentage formula and missed out on a chance to play in the semi-finals.
