Holmes Solid in AFL Debut for St. Kilda

Two years ago, Chicago-native Jason Holmes didn’t know that Australian Rules football existed. On Saturday, he played it at the highest professional level the game has to offer – the AFL.

Granted, this was only a preseason game, the opening match of his St. Kilda Saints’ 2015 campaign played in the small Brisbane suburb of Burpengary. But to be only the second born-and-raised American player to play AFL football, this was kind of a big deal.

Sunny Fort Lauderdale to Kick Off USAFL Regionals Series

The first installment of the USAFL’s Regional Tournament Series provides the perfect kick off of the USAFL 2015 Regular Season.

Florida's bright sun and the bright lights of Central Broward Regional Park in Fort Lauderdale provide the Eastern Regional 18s Tournament with a stunning stage.  Set for the weekend of April 17th-18th, the tournament, is hosted by the hometown Fighting Squids, a club that has seen a great resurgence over the last several seasons.

Four Regional Tournaments Announced

After a successful Western Regional tournament in 2014, the USAFL has expanded the Regional series to include all three regions in 2015.

The East, Central and West will each hold two regional carnivals, one feature the 10s (Metro) format, and the other with full, 18-a-side teams.

First Set of Online Coaching Courses Announced

USAFL coaches will have the opportunity to complete their coaching accreditation in online courses.

The courses, conducted by the league, will allow those interested to earn their Level 1 or Level 2 accreditation.  All USAFL coaches must hold at least Level 1 certification by the end of the 2015 season.

New York’s Aurrichio Has His Eyes on the AFL

New York Magpie Alex Aurrichio began his journey to Australia flying high from a National Championship win by the Pies this October.  Formerly an athlete at Columbia University playing soccer and baseball, Aurrichio joined the New York Magpies during the 2014 season after a showing at the USAFL Combine last April.  Having been in Melbourne for just over a month, Aurrichio is putting his effort into overdrive training with the likes of Collingwood VFL, Coburg VFL, and St. Kilda Sandringham VFL.

Nashville to Kick Off 2015 with Winter Classic Tournament

The first ever Nashville Footy Winter Classic will take place this Saturday, January 10th at E.S. Rose Park in the Music City. What started out as an early season challenge match between the Roos and the Atlanta Kookaburras has snowballed -- pun somewhat intended -- into a larger event where all comers from the USAFL and beyond are welcome.

2015 USAFL Nationals Will Return to Austin, TX

The USAFL Executive Board is pleased to announce the 2015 USAFL National Championships is headed back to Austin, TX October 16 - 18 at Onion Creek Soccer Park. After careful review and a highly competitive bid process, the Board determined that Austin is the best destination for the tournament in 2015. The experience of the 2011 and 2013 events in Austin were fantastic and we look forward to welcoming all players, teams, officials and fans in October.

AFL Coaching Conference Opportunity

The USAFL is currently accepting submissions from coaches to represent the league at the AFL Coaching Conference in Melbourne the weekend of January 30th, 2015.

The annual conference will feature footy experts and experienced coaches discussing the game and techniques with other coaches from across Australia who want to develop their skills and help develop and improve their teams.  It's also a great opportunity for American-based coaches to keep their finger on the pulse of coaching football direct from the source.
