Whats on Tap - 29 June 2019
We are thoroughly in summer's grip, and the USAFL season is well and truly underway. We're in between the first two regionals, and everyone is ramping up their campaigns as we head towards Nationals.
There are five interclub events this weekend and a bunch of community happenings as well. For the games, click on the location for the Facebook event links. For the community events, the links will take you to the host's Facebook page.
SCAFL Grand Final
Silverlakes Park – Norco, CA @ Sunday 11am PDT
Men’s: #9 San Diego Lions (5-0) v #11 Orange County Giants (3-1)
It is a rematch not just of last weekend’s final SCAFL match, but also of last year’s SCAFL Grand Final. The Lions look to remain unbeaten in 2019 and repeat as metro champions, while the Giants’ experience and vigor try to take out the minor premiers of the five team competition.
Update: We have been advised that due to logical issues, the SCAFL Grand Final has been canceled.
GGAFL Napa Round
Napa, CA @ 11am PDT
Men: #2 Golden Gate Roos (0-0) v #19 Sacramento Suns (0-0)
Women: San Francisco Iron Maidens (0-2) v Sacramento Suns (0-0)
Wakey wakey, eggs and bakey! The annual set of matches in scenic Napa pits Norcal rivals. For the men, it’s the first hit out for the D1 runners up and their foes from the capital, while the Maidens try to erase a winless effort at the Cascadia Tournament in Tacoma two weekends ago against the up-and-coming Suns women.
New York Carnival
Tibbetts Brook Park – Yonkers, NY @ 12pm EDT
Men: New York Magpies (1-3), DC Eagles (2-5), Philadelphia Hawks (3-1)
Women: New York Magpies (3-2) v DC/Philly/Boston
It’s an all-out bird fight in Yonkers, and both sets of New York Magpies will be in full volume in at the ‘Pie Nest. The men will look to rebound from an 0-3 effort at regionals, while the Eagles and Hawks try to nick a road win from a place where visiting teams have trouble doing so. The Magpies women, meanwhile, have their tails up after big wins in Montreal and at Regionals, and accept their first challenge on home turf from three small but talented clubs.
Cincinnati Carnival
Point Pleasant Park – Fairield, OH @ 12pm EDT
Men: #15 Ohio Valley River Rats (2-0), #17 Columbus Cats (2-2), Nashville Kangaroos (1-1)
Suburban Cincinnati is the scene for a three-way battle of old-school MAAFL rivals, as the Rats, Cats, and ‘Roos try to scratch out some wins ahead of the Central Regionals.
Savannah Footy Invitational
Daffin Park – Savannah, GA @ 2pm EDT
Atlanta Kookaburras (4-3) v Rome/Jacksonville/Savannah
Footy in the southeast is very much on the rise, with the Savannah Hurricane in development. The adoringly historic Georgian city hosts the surging Kookaburras, as well as newbies Rome and Jacksonville. The Saints, in particular, will be buoyed by their D2 regional championship alongside Boston two weekends ago.
Madison Showdown
Wexford Park – Madison, WI @ 2pm CDT
Wisconsin/Des Moines v #10 Chicago Swans (1-4)
The Wisconsin Wombats kick off their second full competitive season by teaming up with the Des Moines Roosters to host the Chicago Swans.
