USA-Australia Mateship Cup to Debut at Nationals

What was forged in the throes of war a century ago between two nations, remains strong across the decades and a massive ocean.

The United States and Australia first fought side-by-side at the Battle of Hamel in Northern France in 1918.  Since then, troops from both nations have served side-by-side in every major conflict of the 20th and 21st Centuries.

That spirit and tradition is carried on and exemplified by the USAFL, with players from both nations competing alongside one another on the field of play since the league was founded in 1997.

This year marks the centennial anniversary of this incredible Mateship.  In recognition of this major anniversary, the Australian Embassy and the USAFL are inaugurating the Mateship Cup at the 2018 National Championships in Racine, Wisconsin.  Featuring members of both the Australian and American military, teams will be wearing specially designed uniforms and will be playing for the honor of hoisting the Mateship Cup.  The MVP of the match will receive the Bull Allen MVP Medal.  Allen was a footballer and an Australian Digger who was awarded both the Australian Military Medal and US Silver Star, exemplifying the Australian-US relationship.  Each participating player will also receive a commemorative Mateship coin.

The Honorable Joe Hockey, Australian Ambassador to the USA, said: ““From the battlefield to the sports field, the Mateship spirit permeates every aspect of the Australia-United States relationship. Good luck to both teams - you’ll do your country proud!”

USAFL Nationals Tournament Director Doren James added: "The USAFL is proud to partner with the Australian Embassy and Consul-General to add this match to the Nationals weekend to honor and celebrate the men and women who have served both our nations. Their sacrifices have made it possible for us to enjoy playing the game we all love."

All current or former US and Australian military members interested in participating in the match should complete the registration form below.

The match is scheduled for 2pm on Sunday, October 14.  All players should meet in front of Tournament Central tent by 1pm to organize teams. Uniforms will be handed out when teams are organized.
