OC Host San Diego & Dallas

The OC Bombers hosted the 2011 Division 2 National Champions the Dallas Magpies at Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday August 11 in sweltering 100+ degree heat in a mini tournament with the San Diego Lions.

Game one had the Bombers vs Dallas open proceedings, and OC came away with a comfortable 19 point win. The damage was done in the first half as the Bombers hit their straps early and exploded out of the blocks to score three goals before the Magpies knew what was happening. Although Dallas fought back in the second half the Bombers held firm and took the win.

Midfielder Scotty Leal was BOG with an incredible game, racking up possessions all over the ground. Half forward Seb Aguiari had a breakout game kicking almost half the Bombers score, and was well supported by fellow forwards Brad Wetherall and Ryan Lorseyedi. Completing the forward set up were Steve Cassity and Jon Collins across half forward, and this group combined well to get goals on the board.

The Bombers Back 6 were once again solid, led by captain KB Nelson. This group have been playing together all season and are really starting to gel; Frank Kenney and vice captain Paul Lima were as reliable as always and combined with Steve Tait and Brent Harrington to form the kind of defense OC is known for. CHB Guy David had his best game for the club so far using his strength and marking power to help repel Dallas forward entries.

Bombers CHF Tyler Mounce was thrown out of his comfort zone and into the ruck in the absence of Mac Oroke, but he fell back into the role beautifully to be one of the Bombers best all day.

The heat and general fatigue took it's toll on the Bombers in their second game against San Diego and although they had their chances to win, inaccuracy in front of goal cost the Bombers a loss by two points. Although out on their feet, the Bombers fought out the game and were unlucky to lose. Late in the game when it was up for grabs, the fitter players led the way for OC. RJ Meza was solid all day but never more so than in the second half of the Lions game, where he seemed to find another gear and almost won the game off his own boot. Following his gut-running example was Collins, Mounce and Aguiari, and these guys almost single handedly got the Bombers over the line.
