Dallas Top Dogs
The Dallas Magpies continued their strong start to the season defeating the Denver Bulldogs and the Austin crows comfortably on June 2nd in Allen, TX.
In what was expected to be the biggest game in club history, the pies went into the first game confident but wary of the Bulldogs winning history and on-field strength and experience. Perfect conditions for football on a calm Saturday morning made for a great contest and from the very first bounce it was a fierce contest.
The Dallas mid-field were proving to be a problem for Denver and giant 7’1” ruckman Lock, was able to find on-ballers regularly. It was Dallas who managed to convert the first major through a procession of handballs through the center of the ground up to Rackham, who finished the job. The Magpies converted again quickly to get a jump on the reigning D1 National champs who while looking a little startled, continued to fight on. It was a physical Dallas team who asserted their strength all over the field and continued to move the ball with precision up the field. The defenders on the pies team did the job that they have always done and held Denver scoreless in the first half. Skipper Wortman led the defense and was well supported but Barrett, Russo, Olles and Lindsey. The ball was forced back out of the danger zone multiple times and through the mid-field up to the goal scoring end. New comer to the forward line, Zorka, showed his worth with some high-flying aerial work and managed to convert on the scoreboard.
While close on the scoreboard the Dallas team seemed to be in control of the game and it wasn’t until the last few minutes that Denver broke through and scored a goal but it was the pies who answered and put the comeback out of reach. Dallas took out a convincing win by 6 goals 5.10.40 to 1.1.7. This puts Dallas in a solid position leading into the latter half of the season with games coming up against Tulsa and Kansas City on June 16th, then San Diego and Orange County on August 11th.
In the second game of the day for the Magpies, there was no slowing down, as the players continued the superior team work around the field. A persistent Austin continued to show signs of a comeback but it was Dallas, too strong in the major positions who were able to capitalize on the scoreboard.
Dallas controlled the game to run out eventual winners by a comfortable 38 points to take out the 2012 Texas invitational Cup. Thanks to both teams for making the trip to Dallas to make for a great day of footy.
