Darren Green

Darren Green

Born in Brisbane, Australia, Darren is an AUS & US passport-carrying dual citizen since 2020 (& has been a permanent US resident since 2008).

Darren played his first actual games of Aussie Rules in the USA in 2019 at the 1st USAFL Mid Atlantic Cup as a 48yo (having just founded the Virginia Lions) - and is now right at the 50 game milestone.

While he did not play organized Aussie Rules footy for a team/club growing up back in Australia, he did follow it in the media - and was stoked when a Brisbane-based team was finally added to the AFL's national line up. Darren also played multiple other sports in years past (including baseball - which, as a high school student, brought him overseas and to the USA for the first time).

Keen to see our league develop in mens, women's and youth footy - and in the umpiring, coaching and club administration disciplines - he's also looking forward to seeing more Masters games (paced for those "rich in experience") - hopefully sooner rather than later.

Although an enthusiastic big-picture macro thinker, he is also comfortable getting his hands dirty at the coalface, helping to make details work at the grassroots level.

Always searching for learning opportunities and better ways & ideas, you'll find Darren is open to a chat and is happy to listen and learn from others experiences across the US, Oz & beyond. So far, he's also a level one (introductory) AFL certified coach & umpire.
