Journal 4 from Danny
March 13-19
This week started out okay, at least after getting over a weekend sickness. Monday, I had an early morning wake up call for my internship hours. For the few hours that were required in the office, I began brainstorming and gathering information on my project. The project I am pursuing is the Silver Kookas, a database of past players of the Macquarie University Australian Football Club. I have to gather contact information from other players and try to get in touch with the past players to do updated write-ups on what they are up to now. It’s an interesting and demanding task as I have to find all of the information from those past players that are still around the club, which aren’t many. Either way, I think I will have an enjoyable and well-learned time spent working on this project.
I was given my first assignment for both classes on Tuesday. Both assignments are to choose one of the given topics, research it, and write up an analysis. The inner nerd in me thought that this is excellent and a great way to truly challenge myself so far this semester.
When time for training came, I was anxious to hear how the boys did over the weekend. The team they faced was a Navy team based outside of Canberra. Apparently, the squad did quite well with the skills and offense but everyone ran out of gas by the 4th quarter. Although the score was loosely kept, the coaches did announce at training that the boys had lost by a few goals.
The rest of training for the week was hard and full of running, as usual. Luckily, I’ve been quite healthy and fit because quite a few guys have been pulling this and that. Only shows that stretching before and after training does a lot more than one might think. All I know is that I really don’t want to be hanging with Chuck, the sports medicine trainer, on the sidelines.
Friday was St. Patrick’s Day and so I, along with my friends, decided to celebrate the day by sporting green tees and going out for a night on the city. Saturday night, myself and about 10 other guys from the apartment complex squeezed into my friend’s living room to watch the NAB Final Cup of the Adelaide Crows (oh yeah!) versus Geelong Cats. Sadly, I watched my team fail to secure a win but for a pre-season match it was well worth watching. I found myself having to explain every play to the American guys who didn’t understand it, but I didn’t mind since back in the States I’m always doing so, too.
