Australian Mission to the United Nations


The Australian Mission to the United Nations in New York invites applications for the position of Elections Officer. The Officer is responsible for The Officer is responsible for the day-to-day conduct of the Mission’s participation in elections for United Nations bodies. The Elections Officer also assists in pursuing Australian objectives in the Fifth Committee of the General Assembly and supports other functions as required. The position is vacant and is to be filled as soon as possible, subject to the security clearance process.


The terms of employment will be in accordance with the Conditions of Service and New York-Based Staff Employee Handbook. Employment will be offered on a contract basis, for an initial period of two years. The salary will be US$46,311 per annum plus a limited bonus payment based on performance. The Australian Mission to the United Nations will not be responsible for any relocation costs, nor the return of the officer and family to their country of origin at the end of the contract.


The Australian Mission to the United Nations in New York will arrange the necessary work authorization for the successful candidate. Applicants must be Australian citizens to satisfy security requirements.A Designated Security Assessment Position – SECRET level clearance required. Accreditation to the Mission to the United Nations – Required


Job Description


The time allocation among the functions listed will be adjusted from time to time according to the Mission’s priorities, depending in particular on whether the Mission is promoting an Australian candidature for a UN body.


Support the Mission’s involvement in UN elections, including by:


formulating and implementing strategies for Australian candidacies to UN bodies;


monitoring and reporting on UN elections, and preparing election-related correspondence;


maintaining the Mission’s election database and ensuring efficient administrative processes; and


supporting the Mission’s participation in Western European and Others States Group (WEOG).


Assist the Fifth Committee delegate by tracking certain issues, attending meetings, preparing briefing and undertaking research tasks.


Undertake other administrative, research, reporting and liaison tasks as required to support Mission functions.


Selection criteria


Sound judgement and demonstrated organisational skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities, to meet deadlines, and to maintain accurate records.


Persuasive communication skills, including the ability to liaise with representatives of other governments, to develop good working relationships, and to draft concise reports and correspondence.


Capacity to conduct research and analysis on policy issues of interest to Australia in the United Nations General Assembly. Knowledge of the United Nations and processes of the General Assembly.


Proficiency in office computing applications, especially Lotus Notes and database management.
