2002 Nationals
2002 Coopers United States Australian Rules National Tournament Awarded to Kansas City
[KANSAS CITY] The United States Australian Football League is pleased to announce The 2002 Coopers/USAFL National Tournament, hosted by the KC Power, to be held in Kansas City, Missouri, on October 18-20. The tournament, the leagues fifth annual national championship, will attract over a thousand players and fans from coast to coast, as well as dignitaries from Australia.
Last year the tournament was played in Washington, D.C. and was won by the San Diego Lions, who defeated the Boston Demons for the title.
Kansas City worked hard to present us a very attractive package, said USAFL president, Jon Lenicheck, we think the central location and affordability of Kansas City will allow many more players and clubs to attend the 2002 tournament, and thats better for all of us.
We want a first class event not only for the players and guests, said local tournament director, Kirk Kirkpatrick, but also to help promote our sport both locally and nationally. We think a market like Kansas City can really showcase an event like this, he added.
The games will be played over two days on two adjacent grounds within Kansas Citys Swope Park. One ground will be dedicated to A division clubs, and the other to the B division. The tournaments Saturday night gala will be hosted by Kansas Citys Union Station and catered by the Westin Crown Center, host hotel for the event.
The event also will include booths featuring Australian foods and beverages, Australian merchandise, as well as USAFL club and tournament gear. Admission will be free to all interested spectators. In addition, clinics will be held for those who would like to learn more about the game, and try their hand.
