WHILE Australian rules players continue to head to the US chasing dreams of a punting gig in the NFL, the Western Magpies have bucked the trend and recruited an American for the 2010 QAFL season.

Bryan Dragus is a former wide receiver who was also used as a punter in high school football – but after an astonishing debut season for Aussie rules side the Golden Gate Rams, he is now expected to hold down the ruck spot for the Sherwood-based Magpies.

The 198cm/98kg Californian only came to the sport halfway through last season, but adapted so quickly he won the league medal as the best and fairest from just eight games and was invited to train with the national team, the USA Revolution.

He caught the eye of LA-based Aussies, including former AFL player John Ironmonger and QAFL veteran Leigh Barnes, who contacted the Magpies suggesting they give him a go.

The 24-year-old was quick to accept, as he saw it as the perfect opportunity to fast-track his development.

"I am both excited and nervous about trying to make a contribution at an Australian club and am enjoying being in Brisbane," he said.

"My goal is to learn and develop as much as I can, to play in the QAFL, to make the US national team for the next International Cup and to enjoy the Australian culture."

Magpies coach Paul Grentell said his rapid development had continued since arriving, and he was offered a senior list spot after his first training session.
