USAFL Selects Matt Bishop as New Revolution Head Coach.

Matt Bishop

The USAFL is proud to announce the selection of Matt Bishop as the new head coach of the Men's National Team, “The Revolution“.

Matt has been involved in the USAFL for four years, playing and coaching with the Baltimore Washington Eagles.  Matt joined the Eagles in 2005 and was appointed head coach in 2006. During 2006, the Eagles won the Division 2 National Championship. In 2007 the Eagles continued their ascension to one of the elite teams in the country by going undefeated in and winning the Eastern Australian Football League ("EAFL").  At the end of 2007, the Eagles played in Division 1 at the USFooty National Championships and finished with a 2-1 record.  In 2008 Matt took on an assistant coaching role with the Eagles.  The Eagles continued their successful run by again going undefeated in and winning the EAFL title.  During the 2008 USFooty National Championships, the Eagles again played in Division 1, making the final.

Originally from Maryborough, Victoria, Matt has been involved with Australian Football for nearly 25 years.  His playing career has included matches with clubs in country Queensland and New South Wales, as well as Brisbane and Sydney. While in Sydney, he discovered his desire to coach and in 2004 was appointed coach to the Manly Warringah Wolves Reserve Grade team while continuing to play with the First Grade side. With Matt as head coach, the Reserves finished 4th in their competition and won their first finals game.

During his time with clubs in Brisbane, Sydney and Washington, D.C., Matt has been deeply involved with club administration as well as playing and coaching.  Matt held many administrative positions and has been recognized by the clubs for his off-field contributions.  Matt now resides in Sacramento, CA with his wife Amy.  They are both working to establish a team in Sacramento as well as becoming involved in the Golden Gate Australian Football League in San Francisco.

Coach Bishop had this to say regarding his appointment and eagerness to get to work:  "I'm very excited to lead the Revo's into the 2011 Internatinal Cup. In the short term I will appoint assistant coaches and 2009 will be devoted particularly to identifying players in all parts of the country that could possibly represent the U.S. at the 2011 International Cup. During this time the coaching staff will also be developing an online player network to facilitate player communication and development, overcoming the issue of distance. A series of regional and off-season training camps will be planned on a periodic basis, as well as, international and local games."

The USAFL would like to thank all of the highly qualified candidates for their applications and time during the interview process.  The USAFL would also like to thank the Revolution Selection Committee who devoted numerous hours and evenings to the selection process.
