Milwaukee home by 1 point in Louisville

On Saturday June 21 the Milwaukee Bombers narrowly defeated Ohio Valley in a very fast-moving and entertaining game. Although the scores were close at half time, the Ohio Valley looked like they had the measure of the Bombers with the home advantage. However, Milwaukee piled on six unanswered goals, including three consecutive goals by star forward Andy Ciganek, for a total of 7.2 to 2.1 in the third quarter.

At three-quarter time, many in attendance must have thought that the River Rats were finished, trailing by 28 points with the Bombers definitely having the momentum. Milwaukee quickly added to their lead in the first minute of the final quarter, but Ohio Valley took off with five in a row to be trailing by only a point. Players and spectators on the sidelines were all yelling "one more point! one more point!"

Milwaukee got a goal back and the home team's supporters went silent. Then Ohio Valley's Matt Seuling won a free kick on the boundary line about 30 yards out from goal. Before he even had the ball in his hands, the final siren sounded and his team needed 7 points to tie the game. Alas, without some sort of "supergoal" rule, this was not possible. He went back and nailed it right through the middle after the siren, but Milwaukee were still the winners by a point.

According to the Ohio Valley's Matt Seuling, the difference in the last quarter was "greater intensity. The Ohio Valley guys started to attack the ball with their bodies rather than just their hands which had been the case in the previous three quarters. Got on top in the middle and started to supply the forwards with a few more opportunities."

Milwaukee Coach, Heath Moore, urged his team to get into the game during the half-time break. "Ohio Valley was up by three points at the half and we had been playing a little flat up to that point. I just told the boys that third quarters make or break the result and all we needed to do was play like we wanted to win. Our intensity and desperation for the footy lifted in the third term and put us ahead just enough to hold off their fourth quarter surge."
