Nation's First Female President

Press Release

The Mighty Milwaukee Bombers Australian Rules Football Team have once again led the nation, this time with the appointment of the first female President of a USAFL football team.

Julie Upton, or as she wishes to be known, Madam Pres, was voted in unanimously at last Friday’s Annual General Meeting. She will commence her duties as the President along with a brand new board at the first board meeting scheduled for 1st March 2008.

As Julie stated after the AGM “I’m really excited about the future of footy in Milwaukee. Our new board now consists of three women and four men, all tried and tested party animals – we’re in for a lot of fun off the field and, of course, continuing success on the field”.

The new board consists of Secretary – Peter Kerr, Treasurer – Nina Girolamo and board members Rob Parry, Ellie Frey, Doren James and Health Moore.

Past President Heath Moore praised the new structure of the board; ”It’s great to see this new structure. It’s always difficult when the members of the board are so involved with the on field activities of playing, coaching and umpiring. Now we have a board that can focus on the well rounded nature of a true club, both on the field and off the field”.

The vision of the first female President continues the forward thinking of Paul O’Keeffe who has been an integral part of the success the club has enjoyed from it’s inception over 10 years ago. “We’ve always tried to be leaders in the USFooty movement,” he states. “We’ve always fielded a predominately US players team rather than an ex-pats team, we initiated a “player swap” scholarship program with a Perth based club, we’re first to introduce Footy into the Elementary schools, we’ve had our women’s team up and running for a few years now and of course, the 2005 Nationals tournament in Milwaukee set the benchmark for future competitions. I think with Julie’s experience and passion for Footy, the Milwaukee Bombers will have another period of phenomenal growth”.

Julie’s first initiative in her new role will be recruiting “We want as many locals to come and play with us as possible – both men and women. As well as a healthy workout, there is the Aussie culture to experience – that means there is a lot of fun to be had”.
