BLAST FROM THE PAST - #4

Here is the report on the first KC. St, Louis match of the year. They have about four matches scheduled so this will become a great cross state rivalry

Kansas City Vs St. Louis

Last weekend (May 16, 1998) Kansas City and St. Louis made history by playing each other for the first time ever in Kansas City. The last time these teams met was in Warrenington MO. St. Louis won by a few goals that day.

The game started at 2PM. For the first quarter, it was St. Louis all the way. With poor positioning from the Kansas City forward line the St. Louis Full-back took marks on nearly all the in coming kicks from the centre line. St. Louis' use of the running play made it easy work for their team against the Kansas City back line, who were not playing their men.

After the Kansas City coach, Jason Eustice, finished dealing with his team at quarter break, the Kansas City team started to play like footballers. Both the second and third quarters were a great match for both teams. St. Louis, however, kept a three goal lead throughout both quarters. Kansas City was still having trouble with their forward players being caught out of position, which cost them important scoring opportunities.

The last quarter was a hard yakka fight. With both teams getting tired, the Kansas City Power came within a goal of taking the lead. Unfortunately, with the loss of Alex Rocco, one of the main running players for Kansas City, in the last five minutes of the quarter, St. Louis took the advantage. They kicked two more goals to lead at the final siren by 18 points. The final score was St. Louis 10-12-72 to Kansas City 8-6-54.

Goal Kickers for Kansas City: Mark Scott (Aussie) 5, Bruno (Canadian) 2, Bruce Ludegren (US) 1.

Best Players: Alex Rocco (USA), Mark Scott, Jason Eustice (Aussie), Bruno and Ken Cherry (USA).

Goal Kickers for St. Louis: Sam Ingram (Aussie) 7, Blair Smith (Aussie) 1, Cameron Murray (Aussie) 1, Glen Frost (Aussie) 1.

Best on ground for St. Louis: Willy.

Thanks to the umpires, Tom Oxley and Jeff Henshaw, who both controlled the game extremely well on Saturday.

Well done to the St. Louis team on their win, and congrats to the Kansas City Power, who showed a great effort, especially from the Americans who played. It is great to see a team of all Americans except for two Australians keeping up with a more dominate Australian team. Well done blokes! Last of all, thanks to Steve Roth for supplying food for after the game on behalf of Mr. Goodcents and Sam Ingram for supplying the beer

Secretary
