Prime Minister Gillard meets with the New York Magpies

During her recent trip to the USA, the Prime Minister of Australia, Julia Gillard, dropped in to pay a visit to to the New York Magpies at thier sponsor pub, The Australian in Manhattan, NY.  The purpose of her visit in New York was to thank the Australian expat community for their fundraising efforts for the recent flood victims of Australia.

Outcomes of the 2011 USAFL Executive Board Retreat

The USAFL Executive Board held its annual retreat in Austin, TX over the weekend of February 11-13.  The retreat is the one opportunity for the Board to meet in person each year to review the previous year, Nationals, financials and to establish budgets and priorities for the coming year.  The Board approved to leave club and player dues unchanged from the previous year.  Support for the Revolution and Freedom, in their preparations to represent the USAFL at the International Cup in August, will be a major focus.  In addition, the Board will work towards offering more coaching and umpiring accreditation opportunities throughout the year.

The USAFL and AFL Attend 2011 NFL Combine

The USAFL and AFL were guests of Under Armour at the recent NFL Combine in Indianapolis.  Representing the AFL was Peter Schwab, AFL Director of Coaching.  Doren James, Operations Manager attended on behalf of the USAFL. Several scouting and recruiting managers from Collingwood, Geelong, North Melbourne, Fremantle and the Gold Coast were also in attendance.  With the AFL set to adopt free agency in 2012 AFL club representatives took the opportunity to meet with their counterparts from various NFL teams to gain insight into the draft process, player management and the NFL’s free agency system.

Revolution and Freedom Training Camp Success

During the weekend of February 25-27, the USA Revolution and USA Freedom held their final training camp before the 2011 International Cup in Austin, Texas. There were 34 Revolution and 22 Freedom hopefuls competing for a spot on the squads to travel to Australia in August.

"The weekend was a great success and definitely gave us a lot to think about", said Revolution Head Coach, Matt Bishop, "We will be announcing the squad for the 2011 International Cup in the coming weeks".
