The AFL are seeking new American talent

Shae McNamaraA SERIES of meetings in the United States next week could be the first step in creating an AFL career path for American college athletes, in a plan to discover a new type of ruckman.

AFL director of coaching Peter Schwab will spend next week at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, which will also be attended by leading officials from several AFL clubs, with talent identification among his key objectives.

Schwab said he hopes to meet with the "roof body" for US college sport, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), to discuss how AFL could become an option for college football and basketball players who miss out on being drafted.

"If we can tap into athletes who don’t quite make it to the top level, particularly taller players, we could identify a new type of athletic, agile ruckman," he said.
