USAFL sense of community study

A big thanks is owed to the 107 players, men and women, from 24 cities throughout North America who took the time to complete the U.S. Footy team sense of community survey. Two teams went head-to-head in providing the most participants, the New York Magpies and my former team, the Baton Rouge Tigers. At the survey’s closing, the New York Magpies edged out the Baton Rouge Tigers by one participant to win a U.S. Footy sponsored football. However, one of the 107 participants will still win a personal football and will be contacted by email with notification of their prize.

The survey’s goal was to investigate players’ psychological sense of community on their USAFL team and in their neighborhood. A modified version of the Sense of Community Index (Chavis et al., 1986) was utilized to tap into the psychological sense of community construct. In the past the Sense of Community Index (SCI) has been used primarily for geographical communities (e.g. neighborhoods); however, communities of interest (e.g. your footy team, community gardens, knitting circles, etc) have been both under represented and misrepresented in former research. Therefore, the goals of my research are to report the levels of psychological sense of community associated with participation on an Australian rules football team and to improve the psychometric understanding of a psychological sense of community. With your help I will be able to pursue these goals.
