OC Bombers Face Off Against the Golden Gate Roos

Los Angeles, CA – May 20, 2008 – The Orange County Bombers, Los Angeles/Orange County’s Australian Rules Football team, announced their first regional home game against the Golden Gate Roos at Cal Poly Pomona, located at 3801 W Temple Ave, Pomona, CA 91768, with the game starting at 1pm.

Australian Rules football is a fast-paced, action packed sport that combines aspects of rugby and soccer with a touch of basketball.  Originating in the Melbourne area in the late 1800s, the game spread across the country, and the Australian Football League (AFL) constantly packs stadiums for its professional “Footy” games.

The Southern California Australian Football League (SCAFL) in association with the United States Australian Football League (USAFL) has been increasing in numbers and talent since its inception in 2006.  Four local teams – Los Angeles Swans, Beachside Sharks, Orange County Jets and the Inland Empire Raiders – make up the SCAFL metro league and the top players from these four teams join together to form the Orange County Bombers for Regional and National play.  Prior to 2006, the Orange County Bombers were a part of the California Australian Football League (CAFL) which including Santa Cruz and San Diego.

“The metro league is a great way to introduce new players to the game and to get veterans prepared for our regional games,” said SCAFL president Corey Irwin. “A win at Nationals in October is always the ultimate goal.”

The teams will continue with metro league games on Sundays throughout June and July with the Premiership – the championship between the top 2 teams – taking place on July 22nd, with the site TBD.  In addition, regional games will continue with a July 12th matchup in San Diego, August 2nd in New York, September 14th vs. San Diego (site TBD) and concluding with Nationals in Colorado Springs, October 10-12th.

“We’re very optimistic about the upcoming regional season,” said Orange County Bombers and Beachside Sharks coach, John Fragomeni. “We’ve got a great squad and are actively recruiting new players to increase our depth at each position.”
