That Was the Season That Was 2022

Silver.  Atomic element number 47.

Its chemical symbol, Ag, comes from the Latin name argentum, meaning “shiny” and “white”.  It’s been utilized by just about every society in different forms.  From jewelry and currency to its use as a conductor.  It’s used on solar panels and in photography.

And yes, you can also eat it.  But not too much.  Or else you’ll turn into Long John Silver.  Or something.

2022 Top Ten USAFL Games

The League’s 25th anniversary season saw fifty clubs take part in more than 200 games.  From the opening matches in March until the last siren blew in Ontario, California in October, there were hard fought contests and great footy on display.

From the rocky shores of New England to the beaches of California, and from the dusty ovals of Texas on north of the border where the rapids run fierce (and so does the beer), the heartbeat of Aussie Rules continued to thump.

2022 National Championships Recap

In a season of a celebrated milestone, it was fitting that old, stalwart clubs came to the fore at the 2022 USAFL Nationals.

We didn’t see the sun at the Silverlakes Sports Complex in Ontario, California until the awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon. Instead, we ended up with pure, Melbourne footy weather.  Chilly temps and wind and a slow drizzle led to a pelting rain at the end of the day on Saturday, before tepid conditions took over on Sunday.

When It Pours - Day 1 at the 2022 Nationals

Albert Hammond is a liar.  So are the Riveras, come to think of it.

What was originally forecast as a sunny, hot day turned out to be chilly, windy, and finally rainy.  That, with the palm trees and mountains backdropping a bunch of footy ovals, you’dve thought you were in suburban Melbourne and not suburban Los Angeles.

The conditions were an important part of the proceedings over the course of the first day at the 2022 USAFL National Championships.  And the SIlverlakes sports complex proved to be a welcome host for the 25th edition of this large tournament.T

2022 USAFL Nationals - Men's Div 2, 3, 4 Preview

The climax of the USAFL Nationals may be the Men’s Division 1, but the other three divisions are full of talent, intrigue, and skill.

There’s also that carrot of moving up automatically to the next division in 2023, and for teams to take home a cup of their own at the end of the weekend.

Here are the 22 teams to contest Men’s Division 2, 3, and 4:

Men’s Division 2

2022 USAFL Nationals - Women's Divisions Preview

The USAFL Women have been changing the game for almost two decades now, and that isn’t about to change anytime soon.

2021 was an understandably lean year for the Women’s competition at Nationals.  But with nature slowly healing and with it former players and new football converts making their way back to the ovals of the USA, the competition is back to its full-on format.

2022 USAFL Nationals - Men's Division 1 Preview

Eight is wonderful, eight is great.  That was a song on Sesame Street once, right?

Well, it’s true after all.  A year after six teams took to the ground in Austin to determine the USAFL Men’s Division 1 National Championships, a full eight-team field returns to determine who will lift the John Harrell Cup as the best men’s team in the land.

For the past four years (including the one where there was no footy), that cup has called Austin, Texas home.  I’m sure it has enjoyed the music scene and food just like anyone else who goes there.
