Columbus Earns Its Stripes; Enter the Cats

Ten years after bursting onto the American footy scene, a new era begins for the club from the capital of Ohio.

The Columbus Australian Rules Football Club, whose teams up until this season have been known as the Jackaroos and Jillaroos, are officially now known as the Columbus Cats.  The change includes a relationship with the AFL’s Geelong Football Club, which was founded nearly 150 years prior to the team in Columbus.

Export Report: Blecher, Hemmenway Duel in Keilor

Katie and the Mugars travelled to historic Windy Hill to face the Essendon Bombers, led by Canadian foes Kendra Heil and Valerie Moreau, and came out eight point winners.  Playing in the back line for the second straight game, Katie gathered eight possessions and recorded a mark, totaling 22 “Dream Team” points.  The Mugars go into their first bye week at 1-1, and are back in action against the N.T. Thunder at the Avalon Airport Oval on May 26 (first bounce: 9:10pm on Friday May 25 USEDT).

The first ever USAFL game held in the state of Maine saw the newly minted hosts (0-1) play gamely but go down to the established team from Beantown (1-0).  The Cats, augmented with players from AFL Quebec and AFL Nova Scotia, will get their chance for revenge in Boston on June 2nd.  (Report)

Licata, Coventry Join Freedom Coaching Staff

As he prepares his team for the 2020 AFL International Cup, new USA Freedom head coach Dannie Seow is also assembling his coaching staff which will help him towards his goal of growing the program.

It’s a task that will involve knowledgeable people, not only of football the game and of people who play it, but of the footballing landscape of the US.

And he couldn’t have picked two people who fit the bill more perfectly.

Schoennagel Takes Helm as Suns Coach

Vicky Schoennagel has worn many hats during her time with the Sacramento Australian Football Club.

On the field, she’s been a consistent sparkplug defender and two time Lady Suns Nationals MVP, notched an additional 40-plus games in the SacAFL  leagues, and represented her country with the Liberty at the 2014 AFL International Cup.  She’s also umpired matches locally, regionally, and nationally as a certified member of the USAFL Umpires Association.
