Season Preview Week 2016!

“It is spring again. The earth is like a child that knows poems by heart.” ― Rainer Maria Rilke

Another long American winter has finally dissipated, and though the Cold Old Man still clings to certain parts of the country with an iron grip, it cannot stop the coming of the 2016 USAFL season.

Through a gauntlet of local, regional, and sometimes national matches through the varying climes that our landscape offers, 34 USAFL clubs will weave their way towards the ultimate goal of lifting up a piece of hardware at Nationals.

2016 Regional Tournament Schedule Released

NOTE: This article was updated on 3/31 to include the location of the Eastern Regional Tournament.

Last season the USAFL Regional Tournament Series brought together more than twenty clubs for fierce competition at three different locales across the country as they jostled for position ahead of the National Championships.

That Was the Year That Was 2015

The final few pages of Anno Domini 2015 are being carefully torn off the pages of father time, though you won’t know it thanks to ol’ Mother Nature.  December on the East Coast of the United States feels more like that on the East Coast of Australia, with weather more suitable for having a kick in the backyard than sitting inside doing push-ups.

USAFL Top 20 Poll VIII: Crows Hold, LA Breathes Fire

As the rocking and rolling regular season enters its final turbulent end, the battle for the top of the USAFL Top 20 Poll has become an aerial dogfight, with a couple of upsets throwing oil into the engines of the highest flying teams.

USAFL Top 20 Poll VII: Austin Soars to Top Spot

Bombers fly high.  But now, the Crows are flying higher.

Last weekend’s Stumpdown Throwdown, despite not involving the Austin club, is what finally catapulted the 2013 premiers into the top spot in the USAFL Top 20 Poll.  The Crows can thank the Golden Gate Roos and the hometown Portland Steelheads, as they knocked off the Orange County Bombers on the way.  The Steelheads were rewarded with their first appearance in the poll, while the Roos got rewarded with… well… staying in the 9th position for another round of voting.

USAFL Top 20 Poll VI: Here Come the Crows...

Here come the Austin Crows.

Three games in the wind and rain of Wisconsin saw them huff, and puff, and blow down the competition.  They pushed and clawed their way past New York – on the field and on the ladder -- into the #2 spot on the Top 20 poll, but would fall just one point short of overtaking top-ranked Orange County.

USAFL Top 20 Poll V: Much Ado About Little

Two massive tournaments took place prior to the 4th of July weekend, featuring six of the top 11 teams in the country, in addition to games scattered across the landscape.

After all of that footy under the intense heat of late June, the net gain was one team moving two rungs up the ladder, with two others sliding up one spot.  The Orange County Bombers, winners of the Western Regionals, remained in the top spot for the fourth poll in a row, taking top votes from seven of the nine panelists.

USAFL Top 20 Poll IV: Upsets Upheave Pack

Thanks to the Memorial Day holiday, our last poll was published on a Friday as opposed to the usual Wednesday.

And so it is by that happenstance that 24 hours after that poll came out back on May 29th, that three teams pulled off significant upsets, proving our expert panel wrong.
