2019 USAFL All-Regionals Team

Australian Rules football is a team sport.  Eighteen parts plus those on the sidelines working together as one key unit in search of scoring more points than the other team.

But from time to time, it's good to recognize the key cogs of the machines that make up the USAFL clubs.  Over forty of said clubs trekked to one of three cities during the course of the summer -- Raleigh, Denver, and Salem -- in the first buoy that is the oceanic league season.

Let the River Run - Western Regional Preview

For centuries prior to Lewis and Clark happening upon the Williamette Valley, the area around Salem was referred to by the Kalapuya people as Chim-i-ki-ti, which means "meeting or resting place".

Three years after the USAFL’s travelling midsummer roadshow came to said meeting place, it comes again to the Oregonian capital.  As it did in 2016, it will be the climax of what has, heretofore, been a memorable tour for those of us who have had the privilege to go to each of the stops on the Regional Championship series.

Tiger Sharks Swim into USAFL Family

In October, the USAFL Nationals will head to Western Florida for the second time in four years, as the freshly manicured grounds of the Premier Sports Campus at Lakewood Ranch play host to the world’s biggest Aussie Rules tournament.

And the home region will have a brand new club to rep it when the footballs take flight in three months’ time.

The USAFL is proud to officially welcome the Tampa Bay Tiger Sharks as its 46th member club.

Crows Fly, Freeze Burns, Dogs Howl at Centrals

Last month, it snowed in Colorado.  That's what happens when you're so far above sea level.

This past weekend, however, it was the opposite.  It was hot.  And though the sun wore down the combatants at this year's Central Regional Championship in Westminster, Colorado, it didn't deter from the quality of Aussie Rules played.

5280 and Counting: Central Regional Preview

Two years ago, the USAFL held its Western Regional Championships in the Denver suburb of Westminster.

Two years hence, we are back, only this time for the Central Regionals.  It’s always good when a city can shift regions without the aid of some sort of earthquake, right?

The city is a mile high, the air this thin, but the football will be thick with champions trying to do their thing again.  The Austin men and Denver ladies are looking to stretch their trophy case’s structural integrity just a bit more, while others are looking to end the day on Saturday lifting hardware.

Marshall Makes History, Signs with AFLW Bulldogs

With the burgeoning quality and quantity of women’s Aussie Rules here in the USA, it wasn’t a question of if an American would get signed by an AFL Women's team.  Just when, and who.

On Wednesday, those questions were answered when Coloradan Danielle “Dani” Marshall was signed by the Western Bulldogs for the 2020 AFLW season.  She becomes the first American woman to ink a deal with an AFL club.

Hawks, Magpies, Demons and Saints Hoist Cups in Carolina

In this, the fifth year of the Reigonal Championships Series, one thing that can be counted on is that the weather will be unforgiving.

However, by some divine providence of the Australian Football gods, it was a cool and breezy day at the Raleigh MAC Sports & Entertainment Complex.  It was a beautiful day, and for three clubs, the day was made even better by winning the first regional championships of the summer.

Dogs that Bite - Previewing the Eastern Regional

In my mind, I’m going to Carolina.  Tomorrow, we’ll all be there in person.

Raleigh, North Carolina.  One leg of the Research Triangle, home to the NC State Wolfpack, the Carolina Hurricanes, and some damn fine BBQ.  Whether you like it saucy or vinegary is your own choice and I won’t hold you to whatever you enjoy most.

USAFL Announces Partnership With OFX

Times are changing. Choose a partner who can keep up.

Using a bank to transfer money overseas may seem like your easiest option, but it can be an expensive one. Banks publish a daily exchange rate for currencies even though the market exchange rate moves by the second. Therefore, banks typically build in a margin of up to 5% on the daily exchange rate, which they pass on to you (on top of hefty transactions fees).

Whats on Tap - 1 June 2019

Since the end of March, that has been a few USAFL matches here and there, with teams either shaking off the winter cold or preparing for the long seasonal journey with training matches, metro games, and the odd AFLX carnival.

This weekend, however, things kick into high gear.

Nine events across the USA -- including two up in Maple Leaf Land -- punctuate this weekend's Aussie Rules activities.  Attached to each event is the Facebook event page, which will have up-to-date information on venue, start times, and game status should there be inclement weather.

Season Preview Part IX - Womens West

What a long, strange trip it’s been.  We’re finally at the last of the nine part season preview series.  And we saved the best for last.

Just as it has in the men’s game, the West has produced some of the best women’s football, and, owing to the fact that Denver was in this region up until last season, an astounding nine D1 championships on the trot, as well as all four D2 titles contested.

That’s impressive.
