USA Freedom and Liberty Rosters Named for Parallel Cup

The women who will don the red, white, and blue and take on the Canadian national sides at the 49th Parallel Cup in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, have been announced.  In all, 47 players, representing eight USAFL clubs, will make up the USA Freedom national team, and the USA Liberty development team.

Those who have been named to the roster will be tasked with defeating the Canadian Northern Lights and Midnight Suns of Canada development team, respectively.  The Liberty will play the Midnight Suns on Friday, July 31st, with the Freedom clashing with the Northern Lights the following night.

Selectors had a difficult time narrowing down the field from a great many candidates, who were put their paces at the Freedom camp in Arizona in mid-April.  This event is the first test towards the program’s next goal of the 2017 International Cup.  Freedom coach Leigh Barnes and Liberty coach Judith Stein will have their work cut out for them as they determine who will make up those squads, but Barnes is optimistic about the process.

“The makeup of the respective squads was the subject of much debate and we considered many factors when deciding the actual teams at this early stage of the process,” he said.  “Very encouraging that we now have a substantial number of players that are in the Freedom squad that have come through the pathway that having the Liberty team created. Also, great to see many new faces over both squads, it is tremendous to see how we have grown over the past couple of years.”

Minnesota’s Lady Freeze are the most represented team among those making the trip to Florida, with nine members.  The Denver Lady Bulldogs and San Francisco Iron Maidens, the teams that have met in each of the last two Nationals Grand Finals, each have seven total members.

Captaining the Freedom squad is Denver’s Hallie Lee, who also serves as captain of the Lady Bulldogs.  Baltimore-Washington’s Emily Riehl and Sacramento’s Katie Klatt were named vice-captains.

Best of luck to both teams, and congratulations to each and every player.
