Two teams that know each other very well played one of the best games of the year up in Seattle, as Portland hung onto a four point thriller on the road over the Grizz.

PHILADELPHIA vs BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON – Oaks, PA

Philadelphia Hawks 1.1.7 def by Baltimore-Washington Eagles 17.16.118

#15 ranked Baltimore-Washington (1-1) jaunted up to Philly and defeated the Hawks (0-1) by their biggest ever margin, 111-points, to pick up their first win of the year.  Sam Rowley led all goalkickers with a cool half-dozen. (Recap).

Here we are, another year.  Another football season, another half a year around the big glowing ball of gas that gives us life to play said footy.

The season is well and truly underway, under the hot, hot heat of Texas, the liquid sunshine of New York, and whatever it is they’re breathing these days in California.

Around the Grounds: May 20th, 2017

This past weekend was a massive one in terms of good footy around the USA this past weekend.  In addition, we had four new women’s teams make their debut as the USAFL club count reached 39.  Here’s how things went down.

80-35 TOURNAMENT – Des Moines, Iowa

The short-sided tournament was set up as an eight team knockout, with the winners of the first round progressing to the semi-finals and the losers playing a consolation match to ensure that all teams played at least two games on the day.

The Houston Lonestars held home sway over visiting Portland on the return leg of their home and home series that started last season, despite having difficulty finding the big sticks.  The Austin Crows B-side were the big winners on the day, however, as they edged the Lonestars by 11 and trounced Rose City by 27. The Houston Lonestars kicked off their 2017 campaign with two convincing wins over the Tigers and Tulsa/OKC, looking in midseason form already.  Baton Rouge notched a split for the day with a 16 point triumph over the Buffaloes/Flyers combination in the nightcap.  (Recap)

20 years is a long time.  It’s a generation.  A time of growth, and a time of change, a time of maturity.

20 years ago, this country had a handful of teams playing our great game.  Who would have thought that both the game and the league would have blossomed the way it did, just like the blooms of April?
